From one-liners to corny puns, these dad jokes are sure to make kids roll their eyes and laugh (or groan).
There’s nothing quite like a good dad joke. But while they may be a bit embarrassing at first, these little gems are actually pretty important for children’s development. In fact, it’s been found that exposing kids to eye-rolling humor regularly helps them develop resilience. As a result, they’ll be able to cope better when life throws them curve balls.
In an article for the British Psychological Society, humor researcher Marc Hye-Knudsen explains how dad jokes are actually a form of playful parenting. He says that dads often use more teasing and rougher humor than moms do. But, if it’s not overdone, dad jokes can help kids build their resilience by “teasingly striking at their children’s egos and emotions without teetering over into bullying.”
Hye-Knudsen adds that dads also tend to playfully tease their kids about things they find embarrassing and funny. This type of badgering teaches kids that it’s OK to be embarrassed—and that being so isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
